Summer is Upon Us
It’s that time a year again when the last bell rings in the school yards. The anticipation of the first day of summer is on the minds of all children. A time when they can be set free of homework and early to bed schedules. When staying up late playing with friends is the new routine. Those hot summer days filled with playing in sprinklers and the local pool. And a time to see the dentist.
See the dentist you say? Why on earth would that be on the mind of anyone’s summer plans? Believe it or not but the summer is the perfect time to get in those appointments in. By seeing the dentist in the summer, your child will miss less school and can have all their appointments scheduled at convenient times if any treatment plans are in order.
Braces for All Faces
Summer is also the best time for starting an orthodontic program. With the changes that occur with starting braces, a child can get used to any appliance in their mouth and take it easy if discomfort appears. They also can get used to talking differently or overcome any issues of self-consciousness if that might be an issue. In the fall, you will see your child smiling with confidence knowing that soon they will have the smile of their lifetime.Vacation at Our Place
While summer is here and you might have a family vacation in your mind, you may want to think about scheduling the whole family for their six month cleaning at SpringLove Dentistry. We may not have fun rides or pool to swim in, but we do have to give you peace of mind knowing that your family’s oral health care is always taken care of. While you are making your summer plans, why not take the time to schedule your time at our office, your peace of mind, SpringLove Dentistry.

You just caught a reflection of your pearly whites somehow, and you at first glance you thought there was some distortion staring back at you. How could it be that the pearly whites were somehow a dingy gray? Then you decide actually to go to a mirror bright enough to show every pore on your face. This showed you even more of what was going wrong in there.

You are now perplexed on how all of a sudden a quick glimpse at yourself has you becoming a detective. What you thought was a perfect smile is now full of mystery. You find all sorts of things happening in there. You find little black dots that look like pepper on a few teeth. Some redness and puffiness on your gums and oddly enough what looks like a crack in another! And don’t forget that those pearly whites are not that white anymore!

So what does all this mean? You can’t remember the last time you had a dental exam. The thought of sitting in a chair to be told you need to floss every day and brush twice a day reminds you of being a child. The fear overcomes you of what trouble you are in for not taking care of this critical part of your body as an adult. But as an adult, you know that it is crucial to take care of your oral health as much as it is to eat right and exercise.

So why do we let this happen? 38% of all adults ages 18-64 have not been to the dentists in the past year according to the CDC. So this means over a one-third of all adults are neglecting a significant part of their healthcare. You may think that going to the dentist is all about the usual kinds of issues, such as pain or cleanings. But did you know that going to the dentist can be a window to many other problems going on in your body?

Taking care of your oral healthcare can help you to understand the concerns you might be having. Worn teeth might mean you are under stress. Sores that don’t heal could mean cancer. Gum disease is higher with people with types 1 and 2 diabetes. Some premature births are also connected to periodontitis. A routine dental exam may reveal problems with your bones, heart, or digestion because certain warning signs live inside your mouth.

So next time you catch your smile in a reflection, make sure you have had your yearly check-ups taken care of. And if you find that you are having any issues in your mouth, make sure you call us to get in right away. A healthy smile is a happy smile.

What’s nearly invisible, painless at first, and puts about half of all adult Americans at risk for losing teeth? Hint: It’s not dental cavities.

It isn’t fair, but it’s there: gum disease. Just when you’ve gotten past the cavities and braces of youth, here comes that non-stop enemy, gum disease, lurking in your mouth. But that enemy can be spotted early, stopped and turned back – if you know the facts and make the right moves.

How does this enemy get into our mouths? It starts with plaque, the sticky, practically invisible substance made by bacteria from mucus and food particles. Proper and regular brushing and flossing can disrupt and help get rid of most of the plaque. But some plaque remains no matter how hard we try. Over time plaque hardens into tartar, and only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove it.

When plaque and tartar form on the teeth near the gums, the bacteria can start affecting the gums. You may not notice the effects at first. Gingivitis starts as inflammation, the start of gum disease. As gingivitis progresses, the gums become red, swollen and may bleed easily.

Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, often called “periodontal disease.” At this stage your gums start pulling away from the teeth and opening gaps called “pockets.” Bacteria settle in the pockets to create infections. The toxins and the body’s responses can travel down to the bone and connective tissue holding the teeth. Without treatment, periodontitis can and likely will destroy the bones, tissues and gums – and teeth will get loose and need to be pulled.

So how can you detect gum disease early? Watch for these symptoms:
• Recurring bad breath
• Red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums
• Painful chewing
• Loose teeth
• Sensitive teeth
• Gums receding, or teeth appearing longer
If you notice any of these symptoms, what’s next? Visit your dentist for a periodontal exam.

The good news: Regular dental checkups and cleanings, along with good home hygiene and oral health awareness can prevent or stop gum disease from affecting your life and your smile!

Taking care of your teeth every day is actually pretty easy. The doctors at SpringLove Dentistry in Spring, TX suggests practicing these habits daily for a happy, healthy mouth.

Brush twice a day. Just two minutes twice a day can reap enormous oral health benefits. Brush your tongue to remove more bacteria, and use fluoride toothpaste to help strengthen teeth. Be sure to change your toothbrush every two to three months – old bristles lose their cleaning ability.

Floss once a day. Your toothbrush can’t get between teeth, where food and bacteria become trapped and plaque can turn into tartar. Rub the floss up and down against the side of the tooth with the floss curved in a C shape. Floss before or after brushing – just be consistent and thorough.

Eat more vegetables, less sugar. Crunchy raw veggies and fruit like carrots, celery and apples help clean teeth as you eat them. Sugar sticks to teeth, and bacteria love sugar! Limiting desserts, starchy foods and high carb snack foods will limit decay-causing bacteria.

Drink plenty of water. Your mouth needs enough saliva to rinse away decay-causing food particles and neutralize enamel-eating acids. Black and green teas offer the added benefit of polyphenols, which may slow bacterial growth.

Avoid tobacco and smoking. Everyone knows tobacco stains teeth and causes bad breath. But did you know tobacco users are four times more likely to develop oral cancer? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that 80% of people with oral cancer use tobacco. An oral cancer check is part of every regular checkup at SpringLove Dentistry in the Houston area.

The number one tip to keep your mouth healthy – schedule a dental checkup twice a year. We can’t see every surface inside our own mouths. If we wait to see a dentist only when a symptom such as a sensitive tooth or bleeding gums starts to bother us, we’ll likely need much more dental work than if it had been caught in the early stages during a regular checkup.

It’s really not that difficult or time-consuming to enjoy good dental health. Just maintaining a few simple daily habits and regular dentist checkups at our Spring, TX office can help you enjoy a lifetime of talking, chewing and smiling.

Regular professional dental cleanings are vital to keeping teeth healthy and strong. Even when we brush and floss daily to remove food particles and slow the buildup of plaque, after a few months a film of plaque hardens into tartar that we can’t remove at home, laying the groundwork for future gum disease.

What to expect during a professional teeth cleaning
Patients of all ages come to our Spring, TX, dental office for a professional teeth cleaning generally twice a year. At each teeth cleaning, one of our registered dental hygienists will:

Remove plaque and tartar. We remove the plaque and tartar on the teeth and under the gum line with special ultrasonic equipment that makes this process pain-free and much faster than the past.

Polish teeth. Special polishing removes stains and helps to prevent future plaque buildup along the gum line.

Inspect teeth and mouth. We want to catch problems at the earliest stage. And at SpringLove Dentistry in Spring, TX, we screen adults for oral cancer at every cleaning appointment.

Provide dental hygiene suggestions. Our hygienist can help you improve your brushing and flossing techniques, and give you special tips on keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy.

Help children understand the importance of teeth cleaning
The scientific facts of oral health may not be understandable, or inspiring, to kids. So consider a concept that would most excite them. For some kids, the supervillain/superhero scenario might capture their imagination. The supervillain bad germs are using leftover food particles to build strong weapons (plaque) to attack the teeth and gums. The bad germs attack and tear down the walls of the teeth and eat away at the gums. How can we fight back and defend our teeth and gums?

Call in the Spring, TX, dental superheroes – the dental hygienists at SpringLove Dentistry! Our hygienists have special tools and powers to destroy those weapons and drive away the bad germs. That way the body’s good guys can rebuild the teeth and gums. The mouth is saved!

Visit our Spring, Texas, dentist office soon Holiday season in Houston really starts in October, and expenses steadily increase as the year ends. With all of the hustle and bustle, it is easy to overlook one huge money-saving opportunity. Getting dental work done now is like putting money in the bank. How is that true?

Use Benefits Before They Expire
Most dental insurance policies expire at the end of the calendar year. You can save serious money by using the dental benefits now before they expire.

Suppose you have a $1,000 dental insurance policy to use at your Spring, Texas, dentist. You might have received $100 of the benefits already with a teeth cleaning and exam. You still have $900 in benefits waiting to be used. If you have been putting off a needed filling or root canal to stop recurring tooth pain, then your insurance may pay up to 80% of those costs. Even major work like crowns and bridges may be partly paid by dental insurance (up to the policy limits).

Hundreds of dollars per person in your family – don’t forget the kids – that is real money you can save. It just makes dollars and sense to use the benefits for this year’s policy before they expire. Call our Spring, Texas, dental office today to schedule your family’s appointments.

Flexible Savings Account and Federal Health Care Alerts
If you have a Flexible Savings Account (FSA) through your Houston or Spring, Texas, employer, you may be able to use the funds for dental work. Put those FSA funds to work while you still have them available. You will lose any funds not used by the end of the year.

Also, if you are using a federal health care program, you are eligible to add optional dental care coverage. The open enrollment period starts in November. Click here for more information on dental coverage in the marketplace

Fix Problems Sooner, Not Later
It’s true in nearly every field, whether we’re fixing roofs or getting stains out of garments: addressing problems sooner is better than waiting until the problems get worse. In dental health: It is always worse to postpone cleanings, fillings and any tooth repair work.  The bacteria keep attacking the teeth and lead to gum disease; the damaged or mismatched teeth keep grinding, cracking or wearing away. An easy filling today becomes a root canal in a few months.

Using your dental insurance benefits now to address problems early saves you money by reducing your overall costs. Call our Spring, Texas, dentist office today. A smaller fix now is usually cheaper than a big fix later. And living pain free with an attractive smile makes it all worthwhile!

People hurrying, rushing, partying, and having accidents – those are facts of life during the holidays. How do you handle a dental emergency when your Spring, Texas, dentist’s office is closed? Here’s a quick guide to handling the more common dental emergencies during the holidays.

♦ My tooth is knocked out

It may be possible to save an “adult” tooth if you act correctly and quickly. Keep the tooth constantly moist. Don’t touch the root of the tooth. Try to gently place the tooth back into its socket, but if you can’t, then:

hold the tooth in your mouth between your cheek and gums, or

keep the tooth in milk, or

use a tooth preservation product with the ADA seal of acceptance

Get to your Spring, Texas, dentist’s office right away. If the office is closed, visit a hospital emergency room.

For a “baby” tooth, keep the tooth moist and go to the dentist right away. It will be important for the dentist to see whether the whole tooth is out or only a part of it. In some cases it may be possible to implant a baby tooth back into the mouth.

♦ A tooth is cracked

Cleaning the cracked tooth area is the first step. Rinse the mouth immediately with warm water to clean the area around the tooth. Use a cold compress (perhaps a clean washcloth) on the face to control the swelling in the area near the tooth. Visit your dentist as soon as possible to repair the crack.

♦ I bit my tongue or lip

Clean the injured area using water or a mild saltwater solution to rinse the wound. Apply a cold compress, such as a moist piece of gauze, tea bag or clean washcloth, directly to the wound to slow the bleeding and control swelling. If the wound is bleeding a lot or won’t stop after about 20 minutes, or if you are really in a lot of pain, then go to your Spring, Texas, dentist or hospital emergency room.

♦I have a toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm water, or a mild saltwater solution, to clean the area. Remove any food caught between your teeth using dental floss gently. Don’t use aspirin on the tooth or gum area because that can irritate the tissue. If the pain becomes severe, contact your Spring, Texas, dentist or visit a hospital emergency room.

♦A crown has come off

If you lose a crown, save it and contact your Spring, Texas, dentist as soon as possible to schedule a visit to repair the problem. To reduce pain, use clove oil to help numb the exposed tooth area.

♦I may have a broken jaw

A broken jaw is serious: visit your dentist or a hospital emergency room immediately. To control swelling and pain, use a cold compress.

♦There’s something stuck in my mouth or teeth

First try to remove the stuck object by gently flossing and rinsing with water. Do not use a sharp or pointed tool of any kind. If you cannot remove the stuck object, then visit your Spring, Texas, dentist.

Prevention is Best!

To reduce the chance of accidents and injuries to jaws, teeth and gums:

Always wear a mouthguard for sports and recreational activities.

Avoid chewing hard and brittle items, such as ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy. Even if it “never happened before,” chewing a hard thing today may crack a tooth that is now older and perhaps weaker.

Use scissors, not your teeth, to cut things!

Schedule professional cleanings at SpringLove Dentistry every six months to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong.

Are you unhappy with your smile because of yellowed or stained teeth? Have you tried numerous teeth whitening treatments in the dentist office and at home, but they just don’t give you the results you want, or results that last? We’re excited to offer you the solution everyone’s talking about: KoR Teeth Whitening in Spring, TX!

The effectiveness of over-the-counter and professional whitening treatments depends on a number of factors:

Most stains are organic, caused by certain foods, beverages and tobacco that discolor the outer tooth.
Over-the-counter whitening treatments contain much lower amounts of bleaching agents than in-office systems, so they may lighten the stains but can’t totally remove them.
Most professional teeth whitening products contain a much more powerful bleaching agent than anything you can buy at the store and will remove most organic stains, but the results are not long-term.
Fluoride (fluorosis) and tetracycline stains develop during childhood in permanent teeth before they erupt. These inorganic stains actually bind to molecules and become part of the enamel, dentin and bones, making the teeth resistant to both over-the-counter and professional whitening methods.

KoR whitening agents restore the ability of the teeth to absorb oxygen, allowing the whitening gel to penetrate deep into the teeth to dissolve stain molecules – both organic and inorganic. The KoR system provides:

Specially designed, tight fitting whitening trays that keep saliva out: saliva weakens the bleaching formula, an issue with other whitening trays
Superior whitening without heat or laser light
Little to no teeth sensitivity during or after treatment, a problem with many other teeth whitening treatments
Significant whitening never before possible for teeth discolored by fluoride and tetracycline
A long-lasting solution to keeping teeth white
